Why is individuality so crucial to fashion?

Fashion has undoubtedly been a form of self-expression for hundreds of years, however, in today’s world of digital media, individuality has become increasingly difficult to maintain. Social media platforms like TikTok and Instagram have hugely accelerated the spread of trends at an unprecedented rate. This has encouraged people to constantly chase the next ‘viral’ item rather than find and discover new items themselves. Influencers and online creators are heavily shaping the fashion industry and shaping consumer mindsets currently as they shape what is seen as desirable, leading to many people to follow the crowd instead of embracing and finding something individual and unique.

The fast-paced nature of fast fashion and trend cycles means that fashion is largely no longer about personal expression but more about keeping up with the latest viral items or the most trending products. As social media is such a powerful tool, products gain huge popularity which creates immense pressure for creators and their audience to buy into the trends before they disappear. This highlights how much time people spend observing and imitating others rather than focusing on themselves and their own ways of self-expression. The constant cycle of trends makes individuality feel less important despite how essential it is for personal growth and self-confidence. The rapid dissemination of fashion trends has also led to the abandonment of styles. Trends that previously lasted years can now last weeks, sometimes even days, which contributes to a culture where originality is often overshadowed by temporary popularity. Due to this, many people often lose grasp of their own preferences and rely on online validation and trending items to shape their identity.

Trends are often not original and are usually previous renditions from years before such as chunky blazers and high waisted denim from the 80s. Trends often resurface meaning that nothing is original anymore. People will recycle and reuse what has already been done. Individuality is so crucial to fashion as it allows people to form independent opinions, strengthen decision making skills and form a deeper sense of self. Fashion should be an opportunity to experiment, push boundaries and express personalities. Encouraging people to move away from the pressure of virality and embrace the most authentic version of themselves. By valuing individuality over trends, people can form a more meaningful relationship with fashion and within their self-expression.
